Superfan (Kali Flanagan) knows a thing or two about rebirth. Flanagan is just a hair older than 19-years-old, but the New York City-based artist has already changed his artist name, gone through a bold stylistic transformation and moved across the country. When talking about it all he’s eminently straightforward. This is his life after all, and his new album, Tow Truck Jesus, is a granular, 11-track accounting of a young man’s coming-of-age. From grappling with identity and relationships to navigating the complexities of adulthood, Flanagan’s music delves into the raw realities of life with unapologetic candor. His ascent in musicianship is propelled by his confident, deadpan style, captivating audiences with his intimate storytelling and multi-modal musicality. His 2023 residency at L.A.’s Genghis Cohen became a notable scene, drawing attention from industry luminaries like Julian Casablancas of The Strokes, who recognized Flanagan’s mature artistry. Collaborating with producer Gabriel Wax, Flanagan honed a pared-down sound that accentuated the grit of his diaristic writing style while showcasing his musical versatility. As Flanagan’s voice evolved through Hormone Replacement Therapy, his music became a reflection of his personal journey, addressing themes of desire, dysphoria, and self-acceptance with poignant lyricism. Flanagan’s narrative resonates as a testament to the universal journey of self-discovery and growth.
